Soviet Jet Lands on Nose

MOSCOW — A Soviet Tupolev-154 airliner with 160 passengers on board touched down safely on its nose after the front landing gear malfunctioned, the Tass news agency reported Wednesday. Tass said the runway at the Georgian capital, Tbilisi, was flooded with fire-proof liquid, and passengers on the Tuesday flight from the Urals city of Sverdlovsk were unaware of the emergency until the plane made its landing.
