NEW YORK — Dave Winfield, Don Mattingly, Willie Randolph and Rickey Henderson were selected as starters in fan balloting announced Wednesday, giving the New York Yankees half the positions for the American League in next Tuesday night’s 58th All-Star Game at the Oakland Coliseum.
No other team in either league has more than two players among the starters picked by the fans.
Ozzie Smith of the St. Louis Cardinals was the top vote-getter, drawing 2,254,409 ballots to win the starting position at shortstop for the National League.
THird baseman Wade Boggs of the Boston Red Sox, the AL’s leading hitter, drew the most votes in the league, 1,529,819.
The defending World Series champion New York Mets will have catcher Gary Carter and outfielder Darryl Strawberry in the NL starting lineup. The Cardinals, with a solid lead in the NL East, also will have two starters--Smith and first baseman Jack Clark.
Picked as the other NL infielders were second basemen Ryne Sandberg of the Chicago Cubs and third baseman Mike Schmidt of the Philadelphia Phillies.
Cub outfielder Andre Dawson, signed by Chicago as a free agent this season, was picked for a starting spot in the outfield along with Strawberry and Eric Davis of the Cincinnati Reds.
The Baltimore Orioles placed catcher Terry Kennedy and shortstop Cal Ripken Jr. on the starting team.
In the AL outfield with Winfield and Henderson will be George Bell of the Toronto Blue Jays.
The starting pitchers will be selected by the managers and league officials later this week.
Two labor unions have threatened to shut the All-Star Game by picketing the Oakland Coliseum.
Union leaders representing the stadium’s food service workers and striking NBC technicians and cameramen announced plans to ring the ballpark with pickets Tuesday night. The pickets would represent separate strikes.
“We have been bargaining with the company (the Coliseum’s catering subcontractor, Volume Service-Canteen Corp.) for several months and thought we had a tentative agreement,” said Dan Cassiday, spokesman for Local 28 of the Hotel and Restaurant Workers Union. “But now they’ve reneged on the agreement. We feel we have no choice but to hit them where they hurt and shut down the All-Star Game.”
Striking NBC cameramen and technicians in Burbank, Calif., say they are going to load buses with at least 50 strikers and bring them to Oakland to set up picket lines outside the stadium.
The baseball players’ association has not decided whether it will observe the picket lines.
“This is the first time that I have heard anything about it,” said Donald Fehr, executive director of the union. “I cannot comment on it. I am not familiar enough with the facts to make a judgment.”
THE FANS’ FAVORITES
The starting lineups (not including pitchers) for the 58th All-Star Game, to be played Tuesday at the Oakland Coliseum, as determined by fan balloting. The pitchers and reserves, selected by the All-Star managers, will be announced later.
