An undetermined number of Cubans imprisoned since the 1980 Mariel boat lift will be released within the next two weeks, provided they are nonviolent and have satisfactory prison records, officials in Miami said. The Krome Avenue Federal Detention Center in Miami is scheduled to be the first release center, Duke Austin, spokesman for the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service, said. Austin said detained Cubans “cost the federal government huge sums of money.”
