George Brett of the Kansas City Royals and Lou Whitaker of the Detroit Tigers have declined to appear in the All-Star Game, and will be replaced by Kevin Seitzer of the Royals and Harold Reynolds of the Seattle Mariners, the American League announced.
Brett, selected for the past 11 seasons and appearing in 9, said his lingering shoulder ailment would limit him to a pinch-hitting role. Whitaker, a four-time All-Star, cited leg problems.
Brett, the Royal first baseman, and Whitaker, the Tiger second baseman, had been added to the roster by Boston Red Sox Manager John McNamara.
Seitzer is hitting .306, with 38 RBIs. Reynolds has 31 stolen bases.
