Cerritos : Park May Get New Name
The Cerritos City Council is expected to settle a long-running debate tonight on what to name the city’s newest park.
A month ago, the council, at the urging of children living near the 4 1/2-acre site west of Eric Avenue at Rose Street, named the park, the Field. The children said the vacant plot south of Gahr High School had always been known as the Field and should remain just that.
But some residents, disagreed, saying the Field was too vague and nondescript. Debate over a name has boiled into a citywide issue, consuming portions of three council meetings and prompting petition drives and protests.
Hoping to reach a consensus, the city in recent weeks surveyed residents near the park for the third time, mailing a ballot with three choices to 315 homeowners in the west side neighborhood. Rosewood was the top vote-getter with 78, followed by the Field with 63 and Greenfield with 29.
At tonight’s 7 p.m. meeting, the council is expected to make a final decision on a name for the park, which is scheduled to open in October.
