A funeral service will be held today for Joe Gonzales, the 14-year-old South Whittier Intermediate School student whose classmates won national recognition for their project to help the leukemia-stricken boy keep in touch with school. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. in St. Gregory the Great Church, 13935 E. Telegraph Road, Whittier.
Joe died Saturday at Memorial Medical Center of Long Beach, where he had been undergoing experimental treatment for the disease.
The school’s Panther Komputer Klub won an award from the Apple Computer Co. for their “I Love You, Joe” project, in which the group kept in touch with Joe by computer, through telephone calls and visits.
