A viral infection of the heart caused the death of Garry Donell Mims, a 21-year-old Texas man who died while awaiting release from the Los Angeles County Central Jail, the county coroner’s office said. After Mims was found dead in a jail psychiatric observation cell on May 9, his family filed suit against the county, claiming that an unduly slow release process triggered psychiatric instability that led to his death.
