Christie, Cram Lead Britain Over U.S. in Track

European champions Linford Christie and Steve Cram returned to winning form while leading Great Britain to a 126-84 dual-meet victory over the United States Friday in the McVitie’s Challenge at Birmingham, England.
Christie and Cram, who were beaten badly in recent races in London and Nice, France, scored easy victories against modest American opposition.
Christie won the 100 meters in 10.26 seconds, and Cram took the 800 meters in 1:47.08.
American winners included Willie Banks, 55 feet 8 1/2 inches in the triple jump; Dwayne Evans, 20.48 in the 200 meters; Jake Jacoby, 7-0 1/2 in the high jump, and Kory Tarpenning, 17-10 1/2 in the pole vault.
Steve Ovett, 31, won the battle of the veterans when he edged fellow Briton David Moorcroft, 34, in the 3,000 meters. Ovett’s time was 7:52.99, Moorcroft’s 7:53.17.
