Investigating Crane Mishaps

In your article (July 12) related to the crane “accident” at National Steel & Shipbuilding Co. in San Diego, you reported that investigation experts were not available on the West Coast.
There are many experts in Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties who are well qualified to investigate crane, rigging, wire rope and related failures. A number of these Southern California experts, including myself, are currently investigating recent crane-involved accidents, including an earlier accident at National Shipbuilding.
As described in Times articles of both July 11 and 12, it appears the problem may have been related to the basket attachment components, hook or supporting wires and not the crane itself.
