Ivory Disappearing
How unfortunate that travel writer Jennifer Merin (July 5) was impressed by a Hong Kong shop’s “lovely” ivory bracelets, statuettes and chopsticks. Elephants are fast disappearing because ignorant or insensitive consumers seem to find tusks more appealing as adornment on themselves or in their homes than on the elephants. Does Merin know that elephants are often alive and sometimes crying while poachers hack out their tusks? I regret that the ghastly suffering and possible extinction of a wondrous species should be so casually promoted in The Times.
