Gandhi Spurns Gurkhas

NEW DELHI — Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on Wednesday turned down a demand for statehood for 900,000 Gurkhas in the Darjeeling hill district of West Bengal. A spokesman said that Gandhi met Gurkha leader Subhash Ghising and members of his Gurkha National Liberation Front and told them there is “no question of the division of West Bengal, or of a separate state.”
