Llamas, Collins Advance in Oceanside Surf Event

Bud Llamas of Huntington Beach and Richie Collins of Costa Mesa were among those who advanced to the main event of the Stubbies Pro surfing contest Wednesday at Oceanside Pier.
The field of 128 trialists was trimmed to 32 before the fourth round began Wednesday. Half of the fourth-round heats were completed Wednesday, and the other half will be completed this morning at 6:30. The first round of the main event follows at 9:30. Eighteen surfers will advance from the trials to the 48-man main event, which includes 30 automatic qualifiers.
Gary Glisby of Huntington Beach, who finished third in this competition last year, was eliminated Wednesday. Sunny Garcia of Hawaii and Llamas were the two who advanced from his four-man fourth-round heat.
Other Orange County surfers who were eliminated Wednesday included Brian McNulty of Capistrano Beach and Jeff Booth of Laguna Beach. Both were eliminated in the fourth round.
Matt Archibold, George Hulse and Dino Andino, all of San Clemente, had not completed their fourth-round heats Wednesday and were scheduled to compete this morning.
