Police divers on Wednesday retrieved about 95% of a speedboat that disintegrated Tuesday evening off Fiesta Island, seriously injuring the two people on board.
Officials hope to piece together--literally-- what happened. By examining how the boat broke up, they can get a better idea of whether the driver of the boat was going too fast or if other conditions caused the accident, said San Diego Police Officer Bobby Rollins, who is investigating the accident.
“All we know is that it was going very fast, but we don’t know if it was too fast,” Rollins said. “There are still a lot of questions.”
Rollins said the choppiness of the water and wind conditions may have contributed to the accident just off the northwest coast of Fiesta Island. Lois Stiehm, 29, and John Fachler, 30, were taken to UC San Diego Medical Center, where they were listed in serious condition Wednesday evening.
Stiehm and Fachler were upgraded from critical condition late Wednesday afternoon.
