A part-time race driver was killed Sunday when his 1965 Ford 427 Cobra went out of control on a wet track and crashed before hundreds of spectators during a vintage-car race at the Del Mar Grand Prix, officials said.

Alan T. Lloyd, 48, of El Cajon, died at 12:14 p.m. Sunday, four minutes after his roadster went out of control and slammed into a concrete wall at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, the San Diego County Coroner’s office said.

Lloyd was identified as a truck mechanic by authorities. Cecilia Pappas, a spokesperson at the track, said the cause of the accident was under investigation, but there was a light drizzle and witnesses said Lloyd lost control of his car on wet pavement.
