2 Japanese Volcanoes Erupt in Smoke, Ash

TOKYO — Thick columns of smoke and ash soared over Japan Wednesday from two volcanoes that awakened residents with thunderous explosions.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage but officials warned of further eruptions from the volcanoes, which are 600 miles apart.
Japan’s Meteorological Agency said that 2,486-foot Mt. Mihara, on Izu-Oshima Island about 60 miles south of Tokyo, erupted four times Wednesday morning, sending a nearly 8,000-foot high column of black smoke soaring into the sky. The volcano initially erupted Monday.
The 3,668-foot Mt. Sakurajima on the southern tip of Kyushu, Japan’s southernmost main island, erupted Tuesday night, officials said.
