Bellflower : Motel OKd Despite Protest

In spite of efforts by a group of motel owners to quash plans for a 154-room motel near the Artesia Freeway, the Bellflower City Council voted unanimously to uphold the Planning Commission’s approval of the project. The $30-a-night motel will be developed by Sixpence Inns of America, a national chain based in Santa Ana.
Owners of 14 of the city’s 17 motels who say Bellflower has too many motels, handed out flyers and took out a newspaper advertisement last week urging residents to oppose the project.
“In all the cities I have been, I have never seen such a hatchet job like I’ve seen here,” said Peter Suderno, president of Sixpence.
The two-acre motel site will be part of a 10-acre commercial development on the southeast corner of Downey Avenue and Artesia Boulevard that will include a shopping center, a car dealership and a McDonald’s restaurant, city officials said.
