A Little League umpire who was convicted of kidnaping a 12-year-old member of a team was sentenced Friday to 20 years in federal prison.

The prison term was handed down to Kevin Eugene Everhart, 21, of Tucson, Ariz., by U.S. District Judge Judith Keep.

Everhart was convicted Sept. 4 of kidnaping and transporting the youth across state lines for sexual purposes. The Tucson boy was abducted April 26, but Everhart was arrested the next day in Oceanside when his car ran out of gas.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Joan Weber asked for a 25-year sentence. Everhart could have received a life sentence.

The judge imposed a concurrent 10-year term for the transportation charge.

Keep said Everhart is a danger to children, who are fond of him.

Everhart’s stepfather is serving a 25-year prison sentence in Arizona for molesting Everhart when he was a boy, Weber said.

This is Everhart’s second sex conviction. Weber said Everhart was convicted as a juvenile at age 16 when he molested two boys, aged 7 and 8, and was given probation.
