Deaver Jurors Get Weekend Off

From a Times Staff Writer

A federal court jury deliberated in the perjury case against former White House aide Michael K. Deaver for six hours Friday before being dismissed for the weekend.

U.S. District Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson directed jurors to return to court Monday morning for their second day of deliberations. The former White House deputy chief of staff is charged with five counts of lying to a congressional subcommittee and a federal grand jury that were investigating his post-government lobbying activities.

Jackson instructed jurors that they must reach a unanimous verdict of guilty or not guilty on each of the counts in Deaver’s indictment.

The trial, which began on Oct. 19, came to a rapid conclusion this week after prosecutors put on the last of 52 witnesses. Deaver’s attorneys decided to rest their case without calling any witnesses, declaring that the government’s case was too weak to warrant a rebuttal.
