Miss Texas Courtney Gibbs was named Miss USA in El Paso, winning the right to compete in the Miss Universe pageant May 23 in Taiwan. The victory by Gibbs, 21, of Ft. Worth, marked the fourth consecutive year Miss Texas has won the nationally televised contest. The first runner-up was Miss California Diana Magana, and the other three finalists were Miss Florida Monica Bruni Farrell, Miss Mississippi Dana Michele Richmond and Miss Georgia Donna Rampy. Actress Tracy Scoggins and actor Alan Thicke were co-hosts. About 25 animal-rights activists picketed outside the El Paso Convention Center to protest the awarding of furs to the winners.
