South African-born runner Zola Budd, 21, promised she would make Britain her home in a letter to the British Amateur Athletic Board and in a meeting with Mike Farrell, secretary of the Amateur Athletic Association.
“I consider myself British, and I have severed all links with South Africa, except for my family ties,” said Budd, who has been criticized for training in her native country after accepting British citizenship.
“Britain has given me the opportunity to make the utmost of my running talent, and I am determined not to let Britain or myself down,” Budd said.
