Beef prices, which have jumped in recent months, will probably not go much higher thanks to an available supply of cattle that will soon be ready for market, the president of the National Cattlemen’s Assn. said. Calf prices have climbed from 70 cents a pound to about $1, NCA President Dale Humphrey said at the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Assn. convention in San Antonio. But at the same time, mature beef cattle prices have gone from 60 cents to 70 cents a pound, he said. Although feeder cattle, or young cattle, are in tight supply, mature beef cattle are more readily available, Humphrey said.
