A woman comatose since an attack in Watts last month by a group of possible gang members with baseball bats has died, Los Angeles police said Thursday.
Investigators believe Patricia Esquer, 22, of South Gate, was an innocent bystander caught in an attack on two male friends with whom she was walking Feb. 7 near 107th and Hickory streets, Detective Jim Dieli said.
“The girl may have just been caught in the middle of it. They got jumped as she was walking home,” Dieli said.
Esquer died at 5:10 a.m. Wednesday at Martin Luther King Jr.-Drew Medical Center, where she had been since the attack, Dieli said. Esquer’s two friends also were beaten but have recovered.
No one has been arrested.
