The World : Tokyo Jolted by 6.1 Quake

An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale jolted Tokyo before dawn, rocking skyscrapers and injuring nine people. Police had no reports of damage. Japan’s Central Meteorological Agency said the epicenter of the quake was 55 miles below ground in the eastern part of the city. The agency said there was no danger of tsunami, or seismic waves. Train service throughout the capital was disrupted by the 5:34 a.m. quake. Tokyo is on a major western Pacific fault and is earthquake-prone. However, most temblors in the area are mild, causing little or no damage.
