South African Hanged for ‘Necklace’ Murder

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — A black man who was scheduled to hang along with the “Sharpeville Six” today went to the gallows alone after a judge granted a stay of execution for the six.
The pre-dawn hanging of Tsepo Letsoara, 24, took place without fanfare. He was convicted of the “necklace” murder of a black woman--placing a gasoline-soaked tire around her neck and setting it ablaze--in a Port Elizabeth township in October, 1985, during nationwide racial unrest.
