High School Spring Sports : Roopenian Handcuffs Cleveland

Senior right-hander Christina Roopenian pitched a no-hitter and was 4 for 5 with a home run, triple and three runs batted in as Chatsworth routed Cleveland, 20-0, Thursday in a nonleague softball game at Chatsworth.
Roopenian also had 3 stolen bases, walked 1 and faced only 22 batters.
The Chancellors (2-1) piled up 18 hits and stole 20 bases. Kelly Tubin, who was 2 for 4 with three RBIs, also tripled and hit her second home run.
Latoya Williams was 3 for 3 and Dana Lewis was 3 for 5 for Chatsworth. Chatsworth struck for 7 runs in the fourth inning with 5 hits and 6 stolen bases. Julie Bedigian, Jennifer Mischler and Williams each had four stolen bases.
In other softball games:
Newbury Park 6, Royal 0--The Panthers opened defense of their Marmonte League championship with a win at Borchard Park in Newbury Park.
After 5 1/2 scoreless innings, the Panthers (2-2-1 overall) scored all of their runs in the bottom of the sixth. Robin Thomas, Laree Reynolds, Marilyn Carroll and Heather Roland each had run-scoring singles and Newbury Park added a pair of unearned runs.
Carroll did not walk a batter as she notched her first win against two losses. Royal dropped to 4-3-1.
El Camino Real 7, Kennedy 4--Jenny Fleming was 3 for 4 and scored two runs to lead the Conquistadores to a nonleague win at Granada Hills Recreation Center.
El Camino Real (2-1) mounted an eight-hit attack and benefited from four unearned runs. Beth Silverman surrendered eight hits and had five strikeouts to record her second consecutive complete-game win. Silverman, who was 0 for 3, had a sacrifice fly to score a run.
Kennedy (3-5) scored three runs in the first on run-scoring singles by April Ham, Kiely Pleasant and Debbie Bernard. Veronica Sanchez added another run-scoring single in the fifth.
Grant 11, University 5--Grant improved to 3-0 with a nonleague win at University. Sabrina Palmersheim was 3 for 4 with a 2-run home run and 3 RBIs. Lizz Tingley (3-0) struck out nine and walked one in a complete-game win. Tingley also stole six bases. Grant capitalized on 15 walks and 19 stolen bases.
Fillmore 12, Oak Park 8--Fillmore exploded for 7 runs on 6 hits in the sixth and 4 runs in the seventh to come from behind in a Tri-Valley League game at Oak Park.
Oak Park pitcher Wendy Wooton was tagged for 13 hits and eight unearned runs and dropped to 1-3. She also walked six batters.
Taft 8, San Fernando 6--Angie Wood had two doubles and drove in three runs as Taft improved its preseason record to 3-0 in a game at San Fernando. Julie Koppekin allowed just four hits as she raised her record to 2-0.
Banning 9, Sylmar 6--Banning used a six-run fourth to rally from a 6-3 deficit and defeat the defending City 4-A champions in a nonleague game at Banning.
In the fourth, Sylmar pitcher Deann Wright (1-1) walked four batters and hit another and the Spartan defense committed two errors to aid Banning’s big inning.
Burroughs 6, Pasadena Poly 0-- Burroughs pitcher Christy Alves (6-0) struck out 12 in five innings in Glendale Tournament play Thursday.
Karin Matheson had two hits and three RBIs for Burroughs (9-1), which advances to semifinal play today.
L. A. Baptist 14, Brethren 0--Michelle Russner struck out 11 to lead L. A. Baptist in a nonleague game at Brethren. Marni Harris had three hits and four RBIs for the Knights.
Bell-Jeff 4, Hoover 3--Bell-Jeff second baseman Lisa Vasquez threw out a Hoover baserunner at the plate in the top of the seventh to complete a double play and help preserve the win in Glendale tournament play Thursday at Bell-Jeff.
Stacey Smock (3-3) struck out 12 in a winning effort. Smock has struck out 43 batters in the past three days for Bell-Jeff (3-3).
Notre Dame 4, Glendale 1--Sophomore Becca Berline pitched a three-hitter to pace Notre Dame in a second-round Glendale tournament game at Scholl Canyon Park.
Moorpark 6, Santa Ynez 4--Gina Barrerra squeezed in one run and scored on an error and Nana Barrerra had a run-scoring single in the ninth to lead Moorpark (5-1, 2-0 in league play) to a Tri-Valley League win at Santa Ynez.
BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
Crespi d. Harvard, 16-14, 18-16, 15-11--Steve Lepire had 25 kills to lead Crespi in a nonleague game at home. Ken Lynch added 12 kills and 10 blocks for the Celts (6-0).
BOYS’ SWIMMING
Burroughs 74, Monrovia 54--Mike Lucero won the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 breaststroke in a nonleague meet. Teammate Jeff Paggi won the 200 freestyle and the 100 butterfly. Shannon O’Brien won the 50 and 500 freestyle.
GIRLS’ SWIMMING
Monrovia 68, Burroughs 64--Susan Jimenez won the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 butterfly. Kristie Dickey won the 200 and 500 freestyle.
BOYS’ TENNIS
Westlake 16, Simi Valley 2--Darin Pleasant won three matches for visiting Westlake (5-0, 2-0) in a Marmonte League match. Buddy Turl and Jim Abbott won three doubles matches.
