Utility Bill Taxes

David Johnston did a good job on “Anatomy of a Phone Bill” (March 10), but I wish he had emphasized one more part of the bill--the taxes.
The most expensive of the 12 items on the illustrated bill is the $8.25 for flat-rate service. The next biggest item is $5.10 for taxes.
Similar taxes are on the gas and electric bills. This method of taxation is insidious.
Worse yet, the percentages are greater than sales tax.
I believe that most people are unaware of this somewhat sneaky big bite.
