‘Hawaiian Rainbow’
U.S.A., 1987, 85 minutes , 5:30 p.m . Reigning musical documentarian Robert Mugge hits a sour note with this superficial examination of native Hawaiian music forms. The tone is wrong--too much time is spent on arid explanations of its uniquely evolving lilts to the detriment of the actual music. Mugge believes in showing it all without imparting any sense of quality, influence or vitality.
