‘Summer Nights on the Planet Earth’
Sweden, 1987, 104 minutes, 5:30 p.m. Actress Gunnel Lindblom proves herself a superb director of actors. Her ensemble--including Harriet Andersson-- brings out every inch of subtlety and pathos in this portrait of a family gathering, in a limpid summery time swallowed by the snows of memory. Still, the material is less Chekhovian than Ernest Thompsonian.
