A California Highway Patrol officer suffered a compound leg fracture when he attempted to flag down a speeding motorcyclist on Malibu Canyon Road Friday afternoon and the cyclist ran him down, investigators reported.
The cyclist reportedly sped off without stopping, but the CHP said it later stopped three possible suspects for questioning.
A CHP spokesman said Sgt. George Rice was giving a traffic ticket to another motorist north of the Pepperdine University campus when he saw the cyclist approaching at high speed, passing other vehicles over the double center line.
Rice, who stepped into the traffic lane to flag the cyclist down, failed to jump aside in time to avoid being struck, the spokesman said.
Rice was airlifted by helicopter to Northridge Hospital, where he later underwent surgery.
