Uncertain weather dropped the number of yachts starting the 41st race from Newport Beach to Ensenada from 558 to 500 Friday.
The race got off to an orderly start at noon in a 10- to 12-knot southerly breeze that had the huge fleet close-reaching down the coast and hoping for a more favorable westerly breeze by nightfall.
Lead yachts are expected to start arriving in Ensenada by mid-morning today. The race will officially end at 11 a.m. Sunday.
