Reds’ Pete Rose Suspended 30 Days for Shoving Umpire

NEW YORK — Cincinnati Reds Manager Pete Rose was suspended for 30 days by National League President Bart Giamatti today for his run-in Saturday night with umpire Dave Pallone.
Giamatti also announced that Rose was being fined “a substantial amount” for the incident in which he pushed Pallone. It was believed to be the longest suspension in baseball since Leo Durocher, manager of the then-Brooklyn Dodgers, was suspended for the full season in 1947 by Commissioner Happy Chandler for “incidents detrimental to baseball.”
Giamatti also said he was summoning two Reds broadcasters, Marty Brenneman and Joe Nuxhall to his office for allegedly “inciting the unacceptable behavior of some of the fans” with “inflammatory and completely irresponsible remarks” critical of Pallone.
Rose pushed Pallone twice during their argument over a call at first base. Any suspension over 10 days can be appealed.
