CARDIFF, Wales — Finland’s Pentti Airikkala, driving a Mitsubishi Starion, won the 530-mile Welsh auto rally Sunday, finishing half a minute ahead of former champion Jimmy McRae of Scotland.
Behind McRae’s Ford Sierra Cosworth came England’s Malcolm Wilson, who finished some 2 1/2 minutes behind the winner in a Vauxhall Astra.
Welshman David Llewellyn, the leader most the way, lost the chance of providing the first home victory in 22 years, when he crashed in his Audi 200 with 5 of the 28 special stages to go.
