Beverly Hills : Building Limit Is Finalized

The City Council on Tuesday made permanent a temporary ordinance limiting the size of houses to 55% of the lot size. Property owners who want to build above that limit must go through a review process.
The City Council and the Planning Commission indicated that they are not happy with the limit but thought that they were forced to adopt a permanent ordinance because the temporary ordinance expires June 17.
Some residents, primarily in the north part of the city, had complained that many new houses appeared bulky and were out of character with the older neighborhoods’ smaller homes.
Residents in the south part of the city, where lots are smaller, complained that the 55% limit does not allow them to adequately add to their existing homes.
The Planning Commission is considering proposals that would include a sliding-scale formula that would limit development of houses on larger lots in the north part of the city while allowing for larger houses on the smaller lots in the south.
The Planning Commission’s recommendations are expected back before the City Council in about 75 days.
