A member of South Africa’s Parliament was shot to death as he left a church near Johannesburg, police reported. Pieter Jacobs, a Labor Party member of the Colored (mixed-race) chamber of the tricameral legislature, which has separate chambers for whites, Asians and Coloreds, was about to drive away from the church in Alberton when an assailant shot him. In other violence, two people were killed by a bomb at a political rally in the black township of Soweto, five people were killed in Natal province, which has been torn by feuding between black groups, and a white farmer was killed at his farm east of Johannesburg.
