CURRENCY : Dollar Advances; Gold Is Mixed

NEW YORK — The dollar rose Friday against most major currencies except the Japanese yen. Gold gave back some of its gains.
Republic National Bank of New York said gold bullion was bid at $464 an ounce as of 4 p.m. EDT, down from $466.25 late Thursday.
Gold rose sharply in Asia and Europe, catching up with the gains made in Thursday’s hectic session in New York. Gold continued to rise in New York, climbing as much as $2 an ounce, but then sank late in the session and finished below late Thursday’s levels.
In Tokyo, the dollar rose 0.43 yen to a closing 126.11 yen. Later, in London, it was quoted at 125.95 yen. In New York, the dollar finished at 125.97 yen, down from 126.12 yen late Thursday.
The British pound rose against the dollar in London, to $1.8005 from $1.7967 late Thursday. But later in New York, sterling dipped to $1.7970 from $1.8044.
In London, gold rose to a late bid of $464.75 from $454.30.
In Zurich, Switzerland, gold rose to $465.50 from $453.
On the Commodity Exchange in New York, gold bullion for current delivery fell to $464.80 from $467.
