For the fifth straight year, Los Angeles-based Kaufman & Broad Home Corp. has improved its position on Builder magazine’s “Builder 100” list.
On this year’s list--reporting 1987 activity--Kaufman & Broad ranked 10th, up from 14th last year, with 5,500 residential starts and $672 million in gross revenues. According to the survey, the company was the largest builder of single-family houses in California and the third largest in France. The firm also has a home building division in Toronto, Canada.
Bruce Karatz, president and chief executive officer of the publicly held 30-year-old firm, said its regional strategy and concentration on relatively affordable houses are responsible for its climb on the list.
The company, which ranked fifth in The Times’ 17th annual residential building survey, has more than 50 active developments in the United States--the majority of which are in California. Almost three-quarters of the firm’s efforts are directed to the first-time buyer, he added.
