Hundreds of Canadians nationwide protested the U.S.-Canada trade bill by lighting candles, parading in cars and stuffing phony ballot boxes with mock votes against the agreement. Opponents of the Free Trade Agreement, which is to begin relaxing trade barriers between the nations on Jan. 1, demanded that Prime Minister Brian Mulroney call new elections for Parliament before the bill goes into effect. The agreement still must be approved by Parliament and the U.S. Congress. The protests were orchestrated by the Pro-Canada Network, a coalition of labor, social and farm groups that believes the bill will sell out Canada’s economy and culture.
