Bryan Dameworth of Agoura High and Mike Williamson of Thousand Oaks, who waged several exciting duels during the fall, have been named Ventura County co-runners of the year by the Ventura County Cross-Country Coaches Assn.
Agoura sophomore Deena Drossin was selected girls’ runner of the year for the second consecutive season.
Mike Smith of Camarillo shared coach-of-the-year honors for boys’ teams with Fred Coleman of Thacher, and Agoura’s Bill Duley and Debbie Blum of Channel Islands were the girls’ teams co-coaches of the year.
Williamson, the Southern Section 4-A Division champion, won the team sweepstakes race at the Mt. San Antonio College Invitational in October; Dameworth finished third.
But Dameworth, a junior who had defeated Williamson earlier in the season, prevailed in head-to-head competition the next 4 times.
Dameworth, the 1987 County Runner of the Year, defeated Williamson for the county and state Division I titles, finished second in the Kinney West regionals and fourth in the Kinney national championships in San Diego last Saturday.
