The day of the big storm, we were driving our 32-foot, fat, wide motor home, towing our car behind.

We drove through gusty winds and rain right through the heart of the Los Angeles area, from north (via Interstate 101) to south (Long Beach). It must have taken us an hour through heavy traffic.

I had heard stories of the wild, erratic behavior on L.A. freeways, and was leery of driving my big rig. But let me tell you, we were cheek-by-jowl with thousands of L.A. drivers, who were all, arguably, in more of a hurry than we were; and we saw nothing of rudeness, derring-do or recklessness.

I was so proud to be among such a crowd of well-behaved drivers. When the chips are down, L.A. freeways can be safe!
