A 31-year-old Vista man, allegedly shot by his brother-in-law, was in serious condition at Palomar Hospital Friday, authorities said.
Raymond George Newberry, described by sheriff’s deputies as a transient, was shot in the abdomen about 10 p.m. Thursday, authorities said.
Newberry told deputies that his brother-in-law, Phillip Martinez, shot him while he was opening the gate to Martinez’s home in the 1100 block of Tower Place in Vista. Newberry said he did not know why Martinez, 28, shot him.
Martinez is believed to have fled in a car, Sheriff’s Sgt. Danny Goodrich said.
