Offense Alone Doesn’t Make Great First Baseman

Gordon Edes gave it a nice try (Dec. 16), but I think he missed his mark. While I’m inclined to agree with Edes and those he interviewed that this is the best bunch of first basemen the game has seen, I must emphatically state this has been proven from an offensive standpoint only.
The closest he came to evaluating how this group performed at first base was something about Keith Hernandez being an innovator for playing behind the runners.
It’s nice to hit .300 and have 100 RBIs, but good offensive output does not a complete first baseman make.
