Local News in Brief : Placentia : City Council Names First Woman Mayor

City Councilwoman Carol Downey was recently selected mayor of the city, becoming the first woman to serve in that capacity.
Downey, who has served as mayor pro tem for the past year, was unanimously chosen by her council colleagues to serve a 2-year term as mayor.
While on the City Council, she has represented the city on the Santa Ana River Flood Protection Agency, the Orange County Sanitation District and the Heritage Festival Committee. She has also worked with the Orange County Division of the League of California Cities.
Downey, a teacher in the Placentia Unified School District, has served on the council since 1985, when she was appointed to fill an unexpired term. She was elected in 1986 to a full 4-year term.
