In other first-round games:
Mission Viejo 60, El Modena 30--The Diablos (11-0) took a 13-0 lead with 5 minutes gone in the first quarter and were never seriously threatened. Tina Ranker scored 15 points and had 7 assists, and Jennifer Rohrig had 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead Mission Viejo. Kristen Okura had 11 points for the Diablos. Jamie Flynn led El Modena (0-6) with 8 points.
Foothill 49, Lakewood 31--Tayia Foxe led Foothill (4-5) with 23 points. Kristy Walker added 14 for Foothill, which led at halftime, 25-15.
Fountain Valley 56, Esperanza 29--Stacey Hisaka scored 17 points, including 3 3-pointers, for Fountain Valley (6-5). The Barons led by only nine points going into the fourth quarter, then outscored Esperanza, 22-4, in the final period. Shannon Jones led Esperanza (3-6) with 11.
El Toro 78, Huntington Beach 29--El Toro (8-2) outscored the Oilers, 24-2, in the first quarter en route to the victory. El Toro had four players in double figures: Karie Yoshioka (17 points), Dana Lind (14), Tracy Heiser (13) and Sara Bone (10). Ramona Boyd had 10 points to lead Huntington Beach (2-7).
Long Beach Wilson 45, Edison 44--Vivian Johnson scored 15 points Rosie Luevanos 13 to lead Wilson (4-6). Edison (2-6) was led by guards Debbie Fischer with 20 points and Stephanie Moorman with 16.
Mater Dei 48, Valencia 43--Mater Dei trailed, 41-37, with 7 minutes remaining, but the Monarchs (7-3) rallied to outscore Valencia, 11-4, in the fourth quarter. Kelly O’Brien scored 21 points and Cori Martin 12 to lead Mater Dei. Krista McDonald had 24 points to lead Valencia (5-5).
In the Christ the King tournament:
Oregon City 54, Brea-Olinda 42--Suffering a third-quarter slump, Brea-Olinda lost for the first time this season, falling to the defending tournament champion in Queens, N.Y. Brea led, 29-28, at halftime but was outscored, 18-6, in the third quarter, falling victim to a full-court press. Aimee McDaniel scored 12 and Jody Anton and Tammy Blackburn scored 8 each for Brea (9-1).
In the Costa Mesa tournament:
Capistrano Valley 74, Canyon 57--Holly Anderson scored 35 points and Shelley Zierhut 19 for Capistrano Valley in the first round. Keri Erkenbrack scored 19 for Canyon.
