WATSONVILLE — A rifle-wielding man killed one woman and wounded two other people Tuesday at a mushroom farm and then took his own life.
The killer, Ignacio Vasquez Segura, 25, of Watsonville, shot three people at Monterey Mushrooms, between Salinas and Watsonville. He drove away, chased by the California Highway Patrol, to North Monterey County High School, where he shot himself in the car, Monterey County sheriff’s Lt. Robert Baehr said. No students witnessed the suicide, he said.
The name of the dead woman was not released immediately.
The two surviving victims, Heraclio Garcia-Ortiz, 34, and Rachel Gutierrez, 24, were hospitalized in stable condition. Three other people were treated for traumatic anxiety and five were talking to a crisis intervention counselor at the hospital, authorities said.
The motive for the attack was not immediately known, Baehr said. A spokeswoman for the company declined comment.
