IN BRIEF : Boxer in a Coma for 10 Days Dies

LYON, France — Boxer David Thio died today after being in a coma for 10 days following his March 4 knockout by American Terrence Alli in a super-lightweight bout.
Thio, a 22-year-old from the Ivory Coast, never regained consciousness after crumbling to the canvas following a right uppercut from Alli in a non-title fight at Lyon’s Palais des Sports before a crowd of 6,000. Doctors tried for half an hour to revive him in the ring, then took him to the Neurological Hospital of Lyon, where a brain scan showed a blood clot and cerebral contusion.
Against Alli, Thio started strongly, but faded under a series of blows, especially in the eighth round. When Thio returned to the ring for the ninth round, he was visibly weakened and lasted only a few seconds after the opening bell.
Thio was married and had a 4-month-old daughter.
