ANDRE WATTS AT CARNEGIE HALL: 25th Anniversary Recital.

Works by Haydn, Mozart, Schubert and Brahms. Recorded live last April, this CD vividly captures a substantially reserved, frequently introspective performance. In sonatas by Haydn (No. 58, Hob. XVI/48) and Mozart (K. 332), the playing is clean, sparkling and propulsive. Schubert’s Sonata, D. 784, is given a warmer approach with richer sound. So too are Brahms’ Piano Pieces, Opus 119, with some bravura sweep in the final Rhapsody. At 71 minutes and almost no audience noise, this disc is not for Watts’ fans only, but for all lovers of great pianism.
