MILAN, Italy — Danny Ferry, the second overall pick in the NBA draft--by the Clippers--has signed a one-year contract with Messaggero Rome of the Italian basketball league, team officials announced today.
The signing was announced by Ferruzzi, the Italian agribusiness giant that owns Il Messaggero, the Rome daily newspaper that is the team’s main sponsor.
“With Ferry, our team makes a substantial leap in quality,” team President Carlo Sama said.
No financial terms were disclosed, but the Italian news agency ANSA quoted unidentified sources as putting the contract at about $1 million.
Ferry, a 6-11 All-American forward from Duke University, joins several other Americans playing in Italy. Among those in action last season were former NBA players Bob McAdoo, Michael Ray Richardson and Mike D’Antoni.
