THE SIDELINES : 5 Harness Race Trainers Suspended

NORTHFIELD, Ohio — The Ohio State Racing Commission has suspended five Northfield Park harness racing trainers for a one-year period beginning Sept. 8 after their horses tested positive for prohibited drugs.
The commission, meeting Wednesday at the track, suspended driver-trainers Mark Gorfido, Bill Popio, Craig Stein and brothers Jerry and Tom Randall.
Each of their five horses tested positive for ethacrynic acid after they finished first or second in races at the track Jan. 8. The drug, a diuretic, is a synthetic form of lasix allowed for use in thoroughbreds in Ohio but not standard breds. The horsemen also were fined $250 each.
