WORLD : 16 Killed in S. Africa Province

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — Sixteen blacks were killed and 65 homes destroyed in one of the worst outbreaks of violence during three years of factional fighting in Natal province, police said today.
Also Sunday, four blacks were killed, eight were injured and more than 100 homes were razed in arson attacks related to a power struggle in the Crossroads shantytown outside Cape Town, fire and hospital officials said.
The most serious violence Sunday was in the Ntuzuma township near the Indian Ocean city of Durban, where 11 people died and 45 homes were burned, according to the report. It said those killed were either attacked by rampaging mobs or shot by police trying to disperse the crowds.
