Despite Loss, Mater Dei Ranked No. 1 in Basketball Poll

Despite losing to Long Beach Poly in the final of the Tournament of Champions, Mater Dei High School is the top-ranked boys’ basketball team in the first Orange County Sportswriters’ Assn. high school poll.
Mater Dei lost to Poly, 54-47, Friday in the title game. Three members of the Sunset League--Ocean View (third), Edison (fourth) and Marina (10th)--also are ranked in the poll.
In the featured game of the week, fourth-ranked Edison plays host to second-ranked Capistrano Valley at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
